The Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament kicks off on Saturday January 13 in Morocco. The CHAN is a version of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) but one that is reserved for players who ply their trade in Africa.

This is the fifth edition of the tournament. It was originally supposed to be held in Kenya but lack of preparations forced the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to transfer the rights to Morocco.

Sixteen teams have been pooled into four groups to be based in four cities. Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakech and Agadir. The reigning champions, DR Congo, will not be at the tournament. The last edition in 2016 was held in Rwanda.
