Kenyans continue to respond to the dramatic resignation of Nairobi Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe, late Friday January 12.
Igathe threw in the towel citing his failure to win governor Sonko’s trust as basis for his sudden move.
“Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1pm on 31st Jan 2018,” Igathe stated in a tweet.
“I regret I have failed to earn the trust of the Governor to enable me to drive Admin & Management of the county,” he added.
He had submitted a brief letter to his boss too, expressing his intent-with minimal explanation than what his Twitter update conveyed.
Mr Igathe said he was resigning effective 1pm on Wednesday, January 31. He thanked Governor Mike Sonko for the opportunity to work as his deputy.
“Serving Kenyans in Nairobi under your leadership has been an honour and distinct privilege. I am grateful to Nairobians and yourself for giving me the opportunity to serve,” Igathe’s letter read in part.
Responses from Kenyans over the matter ranged from praises for Igathe’s “appropriate” conduct as a deputy county boss to mockery as the wrong partner Mike Sonko had in him.
We feature a sample of the most emotive comments from Kenyans on Twitter.
Igathe praised for resigning
A Kenyan who has resigned without public pressure should be applauded. We are getting there. Kudos @IgathePolycarp

Just when I thought Nairobi was in good hands courtesy of your integrity and diligence. Nonetheless a opportunity to serve Nairobians and Kenyans at large in a different capacity still awaits you. #MunguMbele

For some us, you were the reason we voted for the Governor.
We had a lot of hope in you @IgathePolycarp. & We still do sir!
I wish you the best.

I predicted this a long time ago but I thought once elected it would work out. Your resignation will hurt the people of Nairobi as you brought structure & sofistication to the leadership. Let's pray for Nairobi …

It takes a lot of wisdom and sound mind for one to take such a decision especially in a country like Kenya. What an inspiration to many for the bold decision.

It’s a puzzle. Way forward?
Resignation of Polycarp Igathe exposes weakness of our Constitution .. There is no provision for how a Deputy Governor can be replaced … I urge Governor Mike Sonko to exercise his sole prerogative & appoint either Agnes Kagure or Joanne Mwangi as his Deputy … He won’t regret.

Polycarp Igathe's sudden resignation only hours after RTing tweets from a T show where he was pushing the governor's agenda….I wonder what's happening behind the scenes.

It would help expand the debate if Polycarp Igathe listed at least 10 policy issues (or ideological issues) in which he differed with Governor Mike Sonko, and of which these differences were irreconcilable. @wmnjoya

Folks don’t be fooled by the resignation of Polycarp Igathe. There are plans to collapse Nairobi County Government into a ministry. @IgathePolycarp playing a well written script. @wmnjoya @Disembe pic.twitter.com/QxC81A0xBl

Wait a minute, what if Polycarp Igathe resigned to pick up a CS job and we are here bashing Mike Sonko?

Now onto the hilarious comments
Polycarp Igathe found out first hand just how hard it is to report to a senior officer with junior qualifications.

It's only in January where one resigns on 12th day of the month but the resignation notice takes effect on 31st of January at 1PM, you resign while you smile your way to the bank. Polycarp Igathe is wise. pic.twitter.com/AvnjOPLlj4
