Bob Collymore: Kenya mourns iconic telco boss

Regional titanic telco Safaricom announced on Monday, July 1 Chief Executive Officer Robert William Collymore has passed on after a sustained battle with cancer.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing away of Robert (Bob) William Collymore, CEO of Safaricom Plc, which occurred at his home in the morning of 1st July 2019,” the firm said in a statement.

Bob has been suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukemia. In October 2017, he proceeded to the UK to receive treatment for the same, returned in July 2018 to resume his duties after which he underwent treatment for his condition until his demise.

Members of the corporate leadership landscape, political circles, corporate institutions, and the general public have eulogized the late Bob Collymore as a leader who was distinguished in his managerial role at the regional telecoms giant.

During his tenure at the market-leading telecoms provider, Mr Collymore had overseen a period of remarkable growth yielding to an increase in its share price by more than 400 percent since he took the helm in 2010.

Latest data as of 2019 indicates that the company controls about 62 percent of Kenya’s mobile market. Financial Times reported in May that the popular mobile money service Mpesa is used by two out of every five Kenyans.
