Florida Will Prohibit Kids Receiving Transgender Medical Services.

Members raise their hands during a vote to adopt new rules restricting gender-affirming services in Florida during a combined board meeting of the Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Florida Board of Medicine on Friday, November 4, 2022, in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Members have supported outlawing gender-affirming surgery, cross-hormonal therapy, and puberty blockers as treatments for gender dysphoria in individuals under 18. According to critics, Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo’s recommendations for the rules might have fatal effects on transgender children.

Florida Board of Medicine

According to a rule passed Friday by state medical officials at the behest of Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, transgender youngsters in Florida will no longer be permitted to receive hormones or have surgery to correct gender dysphoria.

Final rules for providing gender-affirming healthcare to children were passed during a combined meeting of the Florida Board of Medicine and the state Board of Osteopathic Medicine in Lake Buena Vista. The rule will become effective after a few weeks of public feedback.

The restriction comes as Republicans and DeSantis work to restrict access to treatments for minors in other jurisdictions, frequently decrying them as medically untested and potentially dangerous in the long run, as another political offensive against liberal ideals.

Although thorough long-term research is missing, many doctors, mental health experts, and medical organizations have claimed that treatments for transgender adolescents are safe and beneficial. According to federal health officials, gender-affirming care is essential for the health and well-being of transgender children and adolescents.

DeSantis regularly criticizes such treatments for children as part of his reelection campaign and frequently uses gruesome language to describe the operations during rallies and speeches. The new regulation decided upon just days before the election, illustrates how DeSantis may use the state’s power to advance contentious political objectives, enhancing his standing as a confrontational GOP cultural warrior.

The guideline forbids physicians from prescribing hormones, hormone antagonists, or puberty-blocking medications to address gender dysphoria in minors. It prohibits children from having sex reassignment surgeries or other operations that change their primary or secondary sexual characteristics.

The Boards of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine’s decision from today will shield our kids from dangerous procedures and extremely experimental therapies. I respect the board’s honesty in making decisions in Florida’s children’s best interests despite intense pressure to approve these hazardous and unproven treatments. According to a statement from Florida’s surgeon general, Joseph Ladapo, “Florida will continue to fight for kids to be kids. Children deserve to learn how to navigate this world without detrimental pressure.”

In a study released this year, Florida’s health officials stated that gender dysphoria therapies are neither safe nor effective and that the state Medicaid insurance program will no longer fund them. Following the report’s release, Ladapo, a DeSantis appointee, demanded the implementation of new regulations governing the procedures.

Florida has also disagreed with federal health experts who support giving young people medicines.

Republicans have recently targeted youth health care that promotes gender equality. The American Medical Association urged governors in a letter last year to veto any legislation that forbade the procedure, describing it as “a grave interference into the practice of medicine.”

Republican lawmakers overrode GOP Governor Asa Hutchinson’s veto of the legislation in Arkansas, the first state to enact such a prohibition on gender-affirming care, in 2021. This year, Alabama Republicans backed a bill that would have made it illegal for transgender children to take gender-affirming drugs. Both laws have been put on hold while legal disputes continue.

The Republican governor of Oklahoma, Kevin Stitt, signed a law last month prohibiting the University of Oklahoma Medical Center from using federal cash for gender reassignment procedures for adolescents. When the Legislature reconvenes in February, Stitt also demanded that some gender reassignment procedures be outlawed statewide.

Top Republicans in Tennessee have committed to supporting draconian anti-transgender laws. The state already forbids physicians from treating prepubescent adolescents with hormones that confirm gender. No one has filed a lawsuit to challenge the statute because, according to medical professionals, no doctor in Tennessee does so.

2021 Bill

Last year, DeSantis signed a bill prohibiting transgender women and girls from competing on public school teams designed for student-athletes who were born female.
