The data protection officer of the city of Bern criticizes the use of Doodle by administrative staff. She advises the alternative nuudel.
nuudel instead of Doodle? The online tool of the Swiss Doodle AG is often used in the administration of the city of Bern. In the current activity report by the Bernese data protection officer Mirjam Graf, she advises using alternatives to find a date. Graf finds that the use of Doodle by the city administration is problematic from a data protection point of view. Because when coordinating to find an appointment, personal data is stored in the Doodle cloud.
In addition, Doodle shares data with IT companies such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc. This is intended to improve the functionality of the site.
On the other hand, it considers the integration of advertising networks to be important problematic. This increases the risk of potentially malicious code being executed in the browser. In the activity report, Mirjam Graf names nuudel as an alternative. This is the online tool of the data protection association digital courage. There is no connected cloud there. Of course, no social networks have been integrated either. All of the data is and will remain on German servers and is subject to the GDPR. You won’t see any advertising at nuudel either.
As reported by attorney Martin Steiger on his law firm blog In the meantime, Ms. Meyer has therefore sent a letter of recommendation to the General Secretariat and the IT coordinators. “Such alternatives offer the same functionalities as Doodle, but do not save any personal data of the planned appointment and are not financed by advertising”, Meyer concludes her argumentation.
Five alternatives to Doodle
There are more alternatives, but one of them might not be interesting for private users because of the pricing. Spoodle is only within the first four weeks free. For up to 1.000 Users, which represents the smallest package, will be provided by free-com solutions GmbH in Vienna after the first four weeks 4.900 Euro charged! Many clubs, private individuals and small companies will probably not want to invest this proud sum. In addition, pasta is free.
More interesting for small users might be Framadate from the non-profit organization Framasoft from Lyon, France. By default, the data is deleted after 180 days. After the deadline, Framadate has another two months to prevent the survey from being permanently deleted.
Framadate is easy to use. Anyone who creates a survey will receive two emails with the public link and the administration page to edit the survey. The service is funded by donations similar to nuudel, there is no advertising. Also, no links to social networks have been integrated for the survey.
By the way, Xoyondo is also complex and data-saving , the service used to be called planiteasy. There are paid accesses for this, but most of the functions can be used free of charge. The provider is Veit Technologies, which is based near Lake Constance.
bitpoll comes from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hamburg and looks quite modern. With it you can do everything that can be done with Doodle at no cost. In addition, the following applies: no tracking, no advertising!
Dud-Poll (dudle) from the TU Dresden seems a bit old-fashioned. If desired, end-to-end encryption is available for this purpose, which many comparable online tools do not offer. There are no costs, neither do companies. The complete source code of Dud-Poll is also available on Github. What more could you ask for?
What alternatives do you use?
